Kargil Vijay Diwas 2023: Prime Minister Pays Homage to Fallen Heroes in Triumphant Victory Celebration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, paid heartfelt homage to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil war, which resulted in India's triumphant victory over Pakistan.

In a tweet written in Hindi, the Prime Minister emphasized that Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a poignant reminder of the extraordinary valor demonstrated by India's unmatched warriors, who shall forever remain a beacon of inspiration for the nation's citizens.

Concurrently, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh paid his respects to the Kargil war heroes by laying a wreath at the Dras war memorial.

As reported by PTI, the solemn two-day commemoration event, dedicated to observing Vijay Diwas and honoring the sacrifice of the 559 soldiers during the 1999 Kargil war, commenced with a solemn ceremony at the Lamochen viewpoint on Tuesday. At this gathering, war heroes and the families of the fallen soldiers assembled to pay tribute to these courageous souls.

The esteemed Northern Army Commander, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, graced the event as the chief guest, and a cultural program followed, graced by the presence of Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande.

In the evening, a touching tribute was paid at the Kargil War Memorial, attended by the Army chief, as well as numerous present and former top army officers.

A poignant gesture was made to honor the supreme sacrifice of the soldiers during 'Operation Vijay,' where 559 lamps were lit at the Veer Bhoomi, each symbolizing a fallen soldier.

During the event, Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande interacted with veterans, 'Veer Naris' (bravehearts' widows), gallantry award recipients, and local residents in Ladakh's Drass region, conveying his gratitude on the eve of the 24th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army declared the successful culmination of "Operation Vijay," announcing victory after a nearly three-month-long battle in the challenging icy heights of Kargil, including locations at super-high altitudes like Tololing and Tiger Hill.

The Army tweeted on Tuesday, "On the eve of #KargilVijayDiwas 2023, General Manoj Pande #COAS interacted with #Veterans, #VeerNaris, Gallantry Award Winners and Awam of #Dras and #Kargil and conveyed his gratitude. A mesmerizing display of military bands and cultural performances showcasing the rich and diverse culture of #Ladakh was also showcased during the event. #IndianArmy."
